Introduction:

In 1979, a popular uprising led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front had overthrown the US-backed dictatorship which had ruled Nicaragua since the 1930s. Mass literacy and vaccination campaigns attracted widespread international praise but the process of social and economic transformation inaugurated by the new government was soon challenged by armed counterrevolutionary forces, organized and financed by the United States, and which – as intended – began to undermine the initial gains of the revolution.
