Elisabeth Gugl, Moein Amini, and Martin Farnham analyze the impact of the introduction of a gender-neutral (GNCS) tenure clock stopping policy on the publication strategies of junior scientists. Their model predicts the result, also confirmed by empirical research, that as a result of the switch from a tenure clock stopping policy that was previously exclusive to women or mothers, there is a higher number of top publications among men but not among women. Thus, a GNCS policy may paradoxically lead to the disadvantage of women and contribute to the observable underrepresentation of women in higher academic ranks.
