From Introduction:
[...] Therefore, this essay argues that it is the development history of East Asia which may provide the most significant lessons for underdeveloped African countries. While traditional approaches still rely on neoclassical theoretical reasoning and advanced economies as role models, the developmental-state approach addresses economic structures, institutions, and policies as well as the political foundation of economic growth and development in contexts of severe market and coordination failures. It is not a closed theory but relies on case studies, historical and comparative institutional approaches, and explicitly explores the institutional foundation of the political economy of economic reform and development.
The remainder of this essay is organized as follows: The next chapter portrays the fundamental principles and characteristics of developmental states. Chapter 3 analyses the policy implications for development cooperation and the adaptability of the concept in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Chapter 4 assesses current debates and future trajectories of developmentalism. Chapter 5 concludes.
