This paper addresses the control processes in the global value creation chains based on the example provided by the debate about socially and environmentally responsible mining and production conditions in the Indian natural stone industry. Following the introduction, which provides for a common understanding and an explanation of the relevance of governance concepts in global value creation chains, an overview of the development of the Indian natural stone industry since the 1990s is provided. The subsequent chapter highlights the origins of the debate over socially and environmentally responsible quarrying and production conditions in the Indian natural stone industry and focuses on the resulting implications and future challenges for the actors involved in this negotiating process. This chapter, in addition to the pertinent literature on the governance processes in the international value creation chains, draws on statements obtained during expert interviews and workshops made in the context of the research project "Sustainable design of international value creation chains: Actors and governance systems" (NAWAGO).
