The publication The Phenomenology of Human Security and Insecurity is the last general overview based on research project of Insecurity which was focused on the phenomenology of human security and insecurity and was conducted mostly at the University of Kuopio between the years 1989 and 2022 and was led by Professor Pauli Niemelä. During the project over forty books and articles were published, and a significant amount of other material. One can justifiably say that the project had an exceptional scale even at the European level because it was remarkably comprehensive in terms of population and age groups and contributed to laying the foundations for analysing the development of these phenomena. This perspective is not limited to research on the social sciences, political science, social psychology, psychology, pedagogy or social security systems, on the challenges of everyday life or demographic issues, but above all on analysing people's behaviour and their experiences in terms of these phenomena.
The multidisciplinary empirical and theoretical analysis of these concepts, especially in the social sciences, has become significant in a way that only a few saws possible until recently. The issue under consideration, insecurity vs. security, has become an increasingly important and topical phenomenon, not only in Europe but also globally, especially concerning climate change, demographic change, and the adequacy of natural resources. Because of this, the analytical examination of security and insecurity will be an even more topical issue, in many ways. One must still notice that insecurity is still mostly caused by ordinary everyday life issues and challenges. For many Europeans, it concerns matters of their own and their fellowmen's well-being and livelihood. The meritorious articles in this publication give a comprehensive picture of the key features of security and insecurity for different populations and age groups.
This internationally published final report of the project, will serve, many different groups, for example, researchers, teachers, administrators on different levels, politicians and, of course, citizens who are interested in these themes. The importance of research on security and insecurity has increased. The issues of security and insecurity on an experiential level - and more widely - have grown, or at least become more complicated and diversified. The results of this exceptionally large-scale research project contribute to the understanding of the different dimensions of these central themes and the planning of decision-making.
